Description of function

Based in Aberdeen, the Front End Engineer role will support BD enquiries, to provide effective technical Engineering solutions to clients. 

The Front End Engineer shall support the bid stage and execution of projects, having responsibility for leading the technical response to enquiries, taking ownership of response submission, and delivering the best content possible in agreed timeframe.   

Once engineering options are reviewed, the role will assist in providing the Client with indicative costs and schedules, identify key risks and opportunities and provide recommendations.

The projects vary from studies, equipment supply and aftermarket service/supply projects.

Job responsibilities
  • They will be required to develop a system level understanding of where Company products or those in product development can provide solutions / benefits to the customer as well as gaining a strong understanding of our IP.
  • They will attend customer meetings and provide technical assurance, producing technical papers for presentations.   
  • Working with the wider engineering team to support new product development and technology development, reviewing conceptual designs and assisting them in being able to fully engineer to manufacture level drawings and specifications. Able to efficiently communicate their design concept to Draughting and other personnel to optimize the design and manufacture process.
  • They will identify industry events to attend and better understand neighbouring technologies from other suppliers for partnership opportunities.
  • Familiar with common project management tools and practices and participate in design reviews and Project kick off meetings.
  • Conduct all activities with due regard to the core values of the company and encourage all team members to do same.
  • Liaise closely with the Engineering Manager and ensure they remain informed of all relevant technical issues.
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are adhered to at all times, actively promote good HSE practices.

 

Specific Tasks –

 

  • Support business development by identifying applications for existing and new technologies and communicate this externally to clients.
  • Develop CTR’s and assist with developing strategy to execute engineering solutions and review and/or write required Contract text covering the Scope of Work.
  • Ensure there is an understanding of the clients’ needs to oversee and guide key areas of discipline engineering, including design codes, legislative requirements and current good engineering practice to develop cost effective engineering solutions.
  • Independently evaluate, organise and prioritise work for self and others to ensure deliverable schedule is being met and budget is on track.
  • Arrange internal and external kick‐off, progress, interface and any other meetings as required by the Scope of Work and to meet agreed deadlines.
  • Manage internal and external engineering interfaces.
  • Oversee production of engineering deliverables, including engineering support to draughting, design calculations, specifications, progress reports, bid evaluations, study reports and various 3rd-party submissions.
  • Sign and issue technical documentation as approver, accepting personal responsibility for its adequacy.
  • Ensure all designs / modifications are fit for-purpose, in compliance with Health & Safety Legislation and adherence to project budget & schedule.
  • Develop customer contact skills.
  • Contribute to IP development.
  • Ensure that design documents produced in-house are technically correct clear understandable.
  • Technically review designs produced by design team, for correctness, compliance with all standards, completeness and manufacturability and instigate changes and improvements using relevant document control procedures.
  • Provide specifications, bid evaluations and assistance to the procurement system. Effectively deploy, monitor, supervise and guide less experienced engineering staff in support of all the above.

Internal Interfaces:  Senior Management / Tendering / Project Managers / Project Teams / Engineering & Draughting Dept

CAPABILITY PROFILE; KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Preference is that candidates are degree qualified in Engineering, but demonstrable experience will also be considered.
  • Candidates must have proven Subsea Engineering Experience working to a similar level.
  • Experience of working on Front End Design and Concept Studies is essential.
  • Demonstrable ability to work within time/budget constraints.
  • Ability to lead a design team across multiple enquiries.
  • Candidates should show a commitment to their own Continuing Professional Development
  • Adhere to strict deadlines and deliver a high level of accuracy.
  • Flexibility and adaptability within role to meet the demands of a changing project and organisational needs.
  • Have an excellent understanding of design codes used in the manufacture of Subsea oil and gas related equipment
  • Understand the properties of mechanical engineering materials including limitations, alternatives, reasons for selection, the effects of their interaction and the appropriate tests that can be carried out to ensure specification compliance.
  • Capable of producing high quality written reports.
  • Possess a good working knowledge of hydraulic and electric controls systems.
