Description of function

To provide leadership, guidance, co-ordination and the sharing of best environmental management practice to the Energy business regions to achieve best in class performance, and to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

To support the Energy business regions in identifying and controlling all greenhouse gas emissions risks in accordance with all relevant regulatory and industry standards, and Company requirements

 

Job responsibilities
  • Ensuring compliance with site ETS Voluntary Monitoring Plans and UK ETS permits.
  • Provide professional leadership and collaborative support to the business by:
    • Providing practical advice, guidance, and support on all aspects of ETS.
    • Enable the business to comply with its statutory duties and corporate objectives.
    • Ensuring that the functional managers within the business understand their responsibilities for managing their ETS requirements.
    • Monitoring, reviewing and recommending management system improvements driven by information using leading indicators, leadership skills and core values and competencies
  • Develop standard reporting template for submission of emissions data according to approved monitoring approach.
  • Lead on producing internal procedures detailed in the approved monitoring plan/ETS permit.
  • Lead ETS Quarterly Data Reporting Form submissions to DESNZ.
  • Compile the data required in the ETS Quarterly Data Reporting Form submissions.
  • Lead external audits and verification engagements, ensuring accuracy and integrity in emissions reporting.
  • Conduct internal UK ETS verification assessments, verifying emissions data and regulatory conformance across multiple energy recovery facilities.
  • Produce environmental reports and submissions for all levels of the organisation and external stakeholders as required in compliance with permits, licences and procedures.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, offering guidance on UK ETS requirements and best practices in MRV processes.
  • Support business development, identifying opportunities to improve UK ETS service offerings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, ensuring alignment between regulatory expectations and certification frameworks.
  • Advise on the surrendering of the correct number of allowances to cover each ERFs emissions each year.
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with relevant environmental regulators.
  • Lead on MRV approach as the ETS policy evolves to ensure full compliance.
  • Deliver ETS and compliance initiatives to the site teams. Create and present tool box talks as appropriate.
  • Acting as the focal point for ETS advice on site; seeking additional guidance from central SHEQS team as required.
  • Remain aware at all times of responsibilities for own and work colleagues, health, and safety.
CAPABILITY PROFILE; KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Knowledge

Skills

 Essential

  • Detailed understanding of the UK ETS regime from a sector already in UK ETS.
  • Thorough understanding of carbon emission calculation methods
  • Deploying audit and inspection methodologies leading to continuous performance improvement
  • Knowledge and understanding of ISO14001
  • Awareness of the relevant management standards ISO9001, ISO45001, and ISO50001.

 

Desirable

  • Understanding of power generation or process technology.

 

Essential

  • Good analytical skills with a clear thought process and high level of accuracy.
  • Highly computer literate with the ability to interpret and collate data, maintain accurate databases and developing IT applications
  • Working within a successful team with high ambition, energy, drive and resilience with an ability to deliver under pressure with effective time management and organisational skills.
  • Developing and maintaining constructive regulatory correspondence and relationships.

Experience

Qualifications

Essential

  • Delivering ETS compliance from an operational environment.
  • Business compliance improvement through implementation of robust management systems and environmental information systems
  • Experience working collaboratively in an operational environment

 Desirable

  • Exposure to UK ETS for EFW sector, from a Government position.

 

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an industry already in UK ETS
  • Degree (or equivalent) in relevant subject.
  • Operational UK ETS experience
  • Full, UK driving licence.

 

 Desirable

  • Keen interest in ESG and a decarbonised future
  • Chartered status with a relevant membership body (or equivalent)
