Description of function

To provide leadership, co-ordination, governance, and the sharing of best environmental management practice to the Energy business regions to achieve best in class performance, and to drive material year on year performance improvement.

To support the Energy business regions in identifying and controlling all environmental risks in accordance with all relevant regulatory and industry standards, and Company requirements.

Accountable to: SHEQS Environment Manager. Indirectly accountable to the regional Plant Managers Key internal and external relationships:

  • Corporate SHEQS
  • Energy SHEQS Team
  • Plant Managers
  • Safety and Compliance Managers
  • Site Management Teams
  • Regulatory bodies and inspectors as required
Job responsibilities

1. Ensuring compliance with site environmental permits or licences as well as specific working plans, including general administration and auditing.

2. Provide professional leadership and collaborative support to the Regional Energy business areas by:

  • Driving environmental performance improvement through behavioural change and active promotion of workforce engagement.
  • Providing practical advice, guidance, and support on all aspects of environment
  • Enable the business to comply with its statutory duties and corporate objectives.
  • Ensuring that the functional managers within the business understand their responsibilities for managing the environmental impact of their operations
  • Monitoring, reviewing and recommending management system improvements driven by information using leading indicators, leadership skills and core values and competencies

3. Develop and maintain constructive relationships with relevant environmental regulators.

4. Assist with due diligence work as and when required.

5. Produce environmental reports and submissions for all levels of the organisation and external stakeholders as required in compliance with permits, licences and company procedures.

6. Support the business in the event of environmental incidents, including fulfilling a role as part of the company’s emergency response team, providing technical advice and guidance to identify root cause and practical actions to prevent reoccurrence.

7. Interpret relevant environmental data to assess and improve the effectiveness of current control measures at the site, managing appropriate actions to prevent environmental breaches or other environmental incidents

8. Lead the embedding and development of a positive and compliant environmental culture at all levels across the business.

9. Provide environmental support and leadership during planned and unplanned plant outages; taking a proactive role in managing and maintaining permit and licensing requirements.

10. Deliver environmental and compliance initiatives to the site teams. Create and present tool box talks as appropriate.

11. Ensuring site is fully prepared for all internal and external audits relating to ISO, environmental and compliance aspects.

12. Liaison with regulators as required for regional energy and any neighbouring sites as required. Building positive and constructive relationships, presenting the organization in a positive, professional and appropriate way at all times.

13. Acting as the focal point for environmental and compliance advice on site; seeking additional guidance from the central SHEQS team as required.

14. Remain aware at all times of responsibilities for own and work colleagues, health, and safety.

15. Deputise for the SHEQS Environment Manager as required.

16. Providing cover for other Regional Technical Compliance Lead colleagues and support to other energy sites when required, for example during audits, holiday periods or outages.

CAPABILITY PROFILE; KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Detailed understanding of the energy recovery sector and its permitting, reporting and regulatory obligations
  • Thorough understanding of CEMS monitoring and reporting systems
  • Deploying audit and inspection methodologies leading to continuous performance improvement
  • Knowledge and understanding of ISO14001
  • Awareness of the relevant management standards ISO9001, ISO45001, and ISO50001.

Desirable

  • Understanding of power generation or process technology.

 

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Delivering business compliance improvement through implementation of robust management systems and environmental information systems
  • Experience working collaboratively in an operational environment

Desirable

  • Experience using root cause analysis tools and software to support investigations.

SKILLS

Essential

  • Good analytical skills with a clear thought process and high level of accuracy.
  • Highly computer literate with the ability to interpret and collate data, maintain accurate databases and developing IT applications
  • Working within a successful team with high ambition, energy, drive and resilience with an ability to deliver
  • under pressure with effective time management and organisational skills.
  • Developing and maintaining constructive regulatory correspondence and relationship.

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years experience in energy recovery sector, or related industry. • Degree (or equivalent) in relevant subject. • Operational environmental experience in the sector
  • Full, UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Keen interest in ESG and a decarbonised future
  • Chartered status with a relevant membership body (or equivalent)
